Sometimes you think things can’t get worse — until you go back and see.
This week, I edited an insert that revisits Kimberley, a year after government promises of housing, infrastructure, and basic services. What I saw was shocking: a city still drowning in sewage, and communities still unheard.
As always, I’m grateful to play a part in stories that expose injustice and give a voice to those forgotten. www.dstv.com

A recruitment programme touted by local influencers promises jobs and training. The only condition: relocation to Russia. But as young women prepare to uproot their lives in the name of opportunity, suspicion flourishes. Influencers marketing the programme admit they have no idea what the recruits will be doing overseas. When a public outcry accuses them of participating in human trafficking, they delete the posts and issue public apologies. Government issues a stern warning against the programme. But who is really behind the drive to recruit young South African women to Russia? Carte Blanche investigates. www.dstv.com

It’s a relatively new crime trend relying on an age-old method of relieving victims of their valuables: pickpocketing. But in this version it’s not a wallet or watch the thieves are after. It’s a crime playing out in shopping malls and old age homes in which the wily perpetrators don’t know what loot they'll walk – or drive – away with. We headed to supermarkets and parking lots in Pretoria to learn the secrets of the pickpocket squads. www.dstv.com

With municipalities in disarray, some of South Africa's most valuable civic assets are vanishing including mayoral chains worth hundreds of thousands.

66 hours. 5 days. One of my most challenging edits yet—not because the cut was overly complex, but because every second counted to meet the broadcast deadline.
This Carte Blanche story took us deep into a deadly police shooting on the outskirts of Butterworth in the Eastern Cape. A notorious gangster—infamous for drug dealing and extortion—was killed in a hail of police bullets on the side of the N2. But alongside him, four private security guards also died. Police claim it was a shootout. That the suspects carried illegal weapons. But the families of the guards insist they were innocent.
We combed through the video evidence, tracked down eyewitnesses, and pieced together the sequence of events to ask one haunting question: Who’s really telling the truth?

Kilimanjaro Marathon 2025!
I was not able to travel with the team to film but I assisted with delivery of the highlights show to local broadcaster SuperSport.
From the foot of Kilimanjaro… with a heart set on something far greater than the finish line.
On 23 February 2025, Bongozozo crossed the finish line of his 6th Kilimanjaro Marathon — but this time, he ran for more than just the medal.
This was his second time running in support of Tumaini La Maisha, an incredible organisation offering life-saving cancer treatment to children in Tanzania.
I had the privilege of putting together this short video to help share his story and mission—a small pro bono contribution from my side to a cause that deserves every bit of spotlight.
Every step Bongozozo took was for hope. For healing. For the future of our children.
The race may be done, but the mission continues.

This project wasn’t just about stitching together footage but about telling a complete story. Combining personal moments from Nadia Ruiz's intense Kilimanjaro summit with interview and footage from the Kilimanjaro Marathon, the edit captures both the individual challenge and the bigger race-day experience in Moshi.
The best part? Seeing how these two journeys connect. From the Roof of Africa to the marathon finish line, this one is all about pushing limits in more ways than one.

Doctors on the Move: Is South Africa's Healthcare System on Life Support?
As South African doctors leave in droves, the future of public healthcare hangs in the balance. With a collapsing healthcare system, job shortages, and the controversial NHI plan pushing medical professionals abroad, the question is—can we afford to lose more?
While the government pushes ahead with the National Health Insurance (NHI) plan, patients are left struggling and a growing exodus of medical talent threatens to deepen the crisis. Meanwhile, even in wealthy nations like Ireland, a dual healthcare system still leaves 20% of the population waiting for specialized care.

Forged Promises, Broken Laws – A Shocking Betrayal in Malalane
Carte Blanche delved into the scandalous story of a Malalane attorney accused of embezzling millions from her clients and continuing to practice law despite being suspended. The investigation, led by producer duo Jana Marx Balden and Chwayitisa Futshane, and presented by Govan Whittles, revealed shocking betrayals and deceit. In a dramatic turn, Carte Blanche and its lawyers faced a virtual courtroom battle to ensure this exposé aired, with the attorneys urgent court application dismissed just hours before the broadcast. The Legal Practice Council, armed with at least 10 formal complaints, aimed to have her permanently struck off the roll. This exposé rocked the legal world and shattered community trust.

Neurosurgery is a highly specialised medical discipline and with just a handful of neurosurgeons in South Africa, these doctors are part of an elite inner circle. So, when a high-powered international surgeon from the United States arrived in South Africa, many of his colleagues welcomed him into the fold. But not long after he started practising, alarm bells were raised about his work. In November last year, a 19-year-old underwent an operation to clip a blood clot in his brain. For an experienced neurosurgeon, this was a routine procedure. But for reasons that remain unclear, this surgeon allegedly clipped the main blood supply to the young patient’s brain. In an investigation spanning two continents, Carte Blanche investigates how a disgraced doctor from the US was permitted to yield a scalpel in operating theatres in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, endangering the lives of his patients. www.dstv.com

This story originally aired on 21 April 2024. Shauwn Mkhize is a flamboyant, high-flying businesswoman and soccer boss from KwaZulu-Natal who was once at the centre of allegations of fraud and tax evasion. MaMkhize secured much of her wealth from multiple government tenders to build low-cost housing in the province. Despite being found guilty of fraud in 2005, she doesn’t take kindly to being called a convicted fraudster – something Carte Blanche did in a previous episode. In February this year, we investigated Msunduzi Municipality’s multi-million rand sponsorship of Mkhize’s PSL football club, Royal AM. Days later, Mkhize filed court papers, saying the label “convicted fraudster” was false and defamatory and insisting her record is clean. But, right after our legal papers had been filed, she withdrew the case. It’s a condition that has led to the deaths of at least seven children in the province, and a crisis that requires significant funding and political will to resolve. But in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, home to one of the province’s biggest cities, the priority seems to be multi-million rand vanity projects that have become a financial drain on the municipality’s coffers. Despite being cash-strapped, the municipality established a development agency tasked with boosting tourism and economic development; an agency that is now cashing in on major projects funded by the municipality and its ratepayers. In East London, what should’ve been a world-class beachfront upgrade has disintegrated into nothing more than a glorified “stoep”, while the bill for the Waterworld Fun Park revamp has ballooned to an eye-watering R120 million. Hennie provides a overview and intro to the series.
As the curtain falls on 2023, I find myself in awe of the journey this year has taken me on. It began with the loss of a long-standing project, client and friendships that had been woven into the fabric of my professional life for over seven years. The challenge that unfolded was daunting, but as the saying goes, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
Among the highlights of this transformative year were my experiences with The Kilimanjaro Marathon and Victoria Falls Marathon, a yearly highlight. Serving as part of the film crew, handling media management responsibilities, and ensuring the quality check of the final product for broadcast on SuperSport brought a unique sense of accomplishment. Producing a series for META Africa and quality-checking and submitting for broadcast "The Secret Rugby Lives Of..." series for BrightRock were tasks that I embraced with enthusiasm. A partnership with Remembrance allowed us to embark on a series of testimonies, aiming to uplift and inspire faith in viewers. Dabbling in logo design was a creative endeavor that added a colorful twist to my skill set. However, not every venture ended on a high note. A hard lesson was learned when, despite playing a pivotal role in securing a broadcasting contract and implementing significant cost savings, circumstances led me to part ways with a project.
On a brighter note, the majority of my time was dedicated to editing 18 Carte Blanche stories, covering a spectrum of topics that captivated and challenged me in equal measure.
As I look back, I see a tapestry woven with threads of resilience, creativity, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence. The setbacks were not roadblocks but stepping stones, and each challenge was an opportunity to learn and grow. Here's to a year of lessons, victories, and the promise of an even more remarkable journey ahead.

Tholeni near Gcuwa in the Eastern Cape is one of the most impoverished villages in the area - unemployment is high and most families rely on grants for survival. But last year, even the government-sponsored social relief and food parcels couldn’t save seven children from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). The children died within three months of each other. Theirs are the tragic faces of an under-reported and existential crisis in the country’s poorest regions: kwashiorkor, a painful condition often affecting children starved of proper nutrition. But with the supply in the tiger bone market shrinking, alternatives are being sought in South Africa. This story originally aired on 17 September 2023. In 2014, Eastern Cape lawyer, Zuko Nonxuba, allegedly set into motion a sinister plan to defraud the desperate families of children with severe disabilities. It's claimed he pilfered millions in medical payouts from the Department of Health by manipulating the mothers of children born with cerebral palsy and pocketing the millions meant for their care. It’s a legal scandal that went on for years while the Legal Practice Council (LPC) – the profession’s statutory oversight body - looked on. Now, the Constitutional Court has finally ruled on Nonxuba’s suspension and, inspired by our investigation, some of South Africa’s top legal minds have come together to fight for the children. As Nonxuba finally gets his comeuppance, Carte Blanche puts the failings of the LPC under the spotlight. www.dstv.com

This story originally aired on 3 September 2023. It was once a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the care of children with disabilities and a beacon of hope in the Eastern Cape. For decades, Ikwezi Lokusa was operated by missionary sisters. But in 2001, government took over and soon afterwards its troubles began. In 2018, Carte Blanche investigated the boarding school and uncovered how the infrastructure had deteriorated, leaving children to sleep on brick beds with only a thin mattress for comfort. A critical shortage of caregivers often left vulnerable special needs children with no one to feed them or change their nappies for hours on end. Back then, the Department of Education made big promises to help the children; but as we return to the school five years later, very little has changed. More caregivers have been employed, but they frequently abandon the children, who continue to suffer hardship and neglect. Carte Blanche investigates.www.dstv.com

Set in Johannesburg’s inner city, it’s a stadium steeped in history. But it’s suffering the consequences of Johannesburg’s steady decay. So, what does the future hold for this landmark, and will it be possible to turn around its fortunes without doing the same for the city of gold? www.dstv.com

This story originally aired on 23 July 2023. Marinda Beukes is a woman on a mission. She’s lived in Benoni, on Johannesburg’s East Rand, for almost 20 years. But in the last few years, fear and desperation have forced her to take to her neighbourhood’s streets on the lookout for the illegal miners who are terrorising the community. Residents say the zama zamas are moving their illicit gold mining operations right into their suburbs. In their single-minded pursuit of gold, the zama zamas are digging right outside office parks and homes. Explosions and shootings are regular events, and blanket-wrapped bodies have been found next to the freeway. The zama zamas have even erected their own village, complete with makeshift markets where they dig, refine and trade their illicit gains. Carte Blanche investigates. www.dstv.com

This story originally aired on 2 April 2023. In December 2015, investigative journalist, Sabelo Skiti, stumbled upon a story about a well-known lawyer in the Eastern Cape claiming to be fighting the good fight for children born with disabilities in the province’s poorer communities. He was helping them take the Department of Health to court for medical negligence with the multi-million-rand pay-outs offering a chance of a better life. Trouble was the lawyer was stealing the money meant for the mostly semi-literate mothers of children living with cerebral palsy. Greedy and unrepentant, he exploited their desperation without ever intending for them to see a cent of their pay-outs. Skiti’s story prompted the Special Investigating Unit to take a closer look and yet, seven years later, the rogue lawyer continues to slither from their clutches. www.dstv.com

This story originally aired on 12 March 2023. Shortly after outgoing Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter’s explosive interview on eNCA, reports emerged of a secret intelligence dossier on which many of his damning corruption claims were based. It alleges the criminality, that has largely brought the utility to its knees, is controlled by four powerful cartels and that at least two high-ranking members of the Cabinet are involved. If true, the report is proof of corruption on an unprecedented scale that has plunged the country into darkness and threatens the unravelling of the political establishment. But why have none of those exposed in the dossier been named, let alone arrested? Carte Blanche investigates. www.dstv.com

So much so that it’s considered a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) - a disease that medical aids are obliged to cover. So why are so many of them refusing to pay for treatment for these children? www.dstv.com

This story originally aired on 12 February 2023. Former cricketer, Kobus Olivier, moved to Ukraine to build a better life. Living with four dogs, he worked as a teacher and a cricket coach. Then, on the 24th of February last year, Russia launched its invasion, signalling the start of a devastating war that shows no sign of ending. Kobus held out for as long as he could, barricading himself and his beloved pets into a cramped Kyiv apartment. But the Russian advance from the east was violent and, in the early stages, seemingly inevitable. At the urging of close friends, many of them former cricketers, Kobus decided to flee. An eerily calm voice on the other end of the line demands you hand over a significant amount of cash or risk arrest for a heinous crime you know you didn’t commit. However, the voice doesn’t belong to a police officer but rather an inmate in a maximum-security prison, one of the masterminds of an elaborate extortion scam. It manipulates sex workers into handing over the contact numbers of their less-favoured clients, transformed into unwitting victims by a single phone call. www.dstv.com

Now, it’s seemingly come full circle. Two brothers - Rajesh and Atul Gupta, wanted on a red Interpol notice for widespread graft, fraud, and money laundering – have been arrested in Dubai. The brothers and their wives had fled South Africa amid allegations of looting, estimated to have cost the country tens of billions of rands, crippling Eskom, SAA, Transnet, Denel and Prasa, among others... But do the long-awaited arrests mean two of the masterminds of State Capture are now a step closer to being handed over to South African authorities?

The Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon, born in 2002 from a casual brainstorm over Kilimanjaro Lager, has evolved into a powerhouse event for Tanzania. Conceived by Wild Frontiers, the marathon aimed to blend sport with tourism, leveraging the iconic Kilimanjaro as its backdrop to attract global runners. In 2024, the event celebrated its 22nd year, a testament to its enduring appeal and the steadfast support of sponsors and athletes alike.
Initially modest, the inaugural race in 2003 drew a mix of international and local runners, numbering around 300 to 400 participants. Villagers curiously watched as runners navigated dirt roads, goats in tow, with timekeeping managed manually—a far cry from today's bustling event.
From its humble beginnings offering a full marathon, half marathon, and 10 km race, the marathon has expanded significantly. Today, it includes a Fun Run that caters to families and beginners, transforming the race day into a community celebration.
Central to its success are sponsors like Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, whose contributions have catapulted the event into a global spectacle. The marathon serves as a proving ground for Tanzania's rising stars in athletics, while also attracting top international talent. Participants from 45 nations converge annually, making it a truly international affair that transcends borders.
Beyond its athletic prowess, the marathon is a catalyst for economic growth and healthier lifestyles across Tanzania. Sponsors integrate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, amplifying the event's impact on local communities and the national economy.
Looking ahead to 2025, organizers promise an even more thrilling experience, with plans to enhance both the lead-up to the event and race day itself. They encourage participation and engagement through social media, fostering a global dialogue around this flagship Tanzanian event.
In essence, the Kilimanjaro Premium Lager Marathon is not just a race but a cultural phenomenon—a testament to Tanzania's spirit of innovation and the enduring allure of Kilimanjaro.

The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, established in 2005 by Wild Frontiers, has evolved into a premier event on the African running calendar. Initially conceived through local partnerships amidst economic challenges, the marathon has grown substantially over the years. By 2010, economic improvements allowed for expanded participation and sponsorship, solidifying its place as a significant sporting and cultural event.
The marathon's unique allure lies in its scenic route, starting with a breathtaking crossing of the Victoria Falls Bridge from Zimbabwe into Zambia. Participants traverse a World Heritage Site, offering glimpses of wildlife such as elephants amid stunning landscapes. Beyond the race, Victoria Falls provides a backdrop rich in safari adventures and outdoor activities, enhancing the event's appeal to global participants.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the organizers innovated with the Vic Falls Virtual Marathon, enabling worldwide participation and maintaining community engagement despite travel restrictions. This adaptation underscored the marathon's resilience and global reach.
Supported by Zimbabwe's leading companies, the marathon not only promotes physical fitness but also stimulates economic growth in the region. It serves as a catalyst for corporate social responsibility initiatives and has catalyzed a broader fitness culture within Zimbabwe and neighboring countries.
Looking ahead, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon is poised to further establish itself as a premier destination marathon, reflecting its remarkable journey from humble beginnings to international acclaim.
